Death Doula

Lord give me the dignity
of a black domestic long-hair cat
in liver failure, who (but of course)
did not entertain any of my terror
or abject heartbreak; softest fur
bathed in tears, so many hands – lord,

give me this gentle death. Carry me
in song and drape me across towels,
your arms, tell me about the sun
that browned my fur on the dashboard.
Tell me about the grass, my purposeful leaps,
kiss me to sleep with lullabies. Give me rest.

Show me your heart, ripped open –
show me your arms – I’ll tell you where
I’ve always called home.
